Assistance to Samoa, Tonga and Sumatra

The Queensland Government is working with the federal government and other states to provide help to Samoa, Tonga and the Indonesian Island of Sumatra following the recent earthquakes and tsunami.

Support being offered includes:

  • $2 million initial support package from the Australian government, which includes Australian medical and emergency services personnel travelling to Samoa
  • urgently needed medical supplies chartered as part of the support package
  • collecting funds to provide relief assistance.

Locating family and friends

Australians who have concerns for the welfare of family and friends in Samoa, Tonga and Sumatra should first attempt to contact them directly.

You can also call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on (02) 6261 3305, or call 1300 555 135 within Australia (for the cost of a local call).

Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal

On 1 October 2009, the Premier launched a disaster relief appeal for the South Pacific (Samoa and Tonga) Tsunami and the Earthquake in the Indonesian Archipelago. The Queensland Government made a contribution of $500,000 to start the appeal.

The appeal is accepting financial donations. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Call 1800 021 884 and provide your credit card details (24 hours a day).

In person

Visit any Queensland branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Bank, National Australia Bank, ANZ Bank, Bank of Queensland or Suncorp.
